VILLAGE CHRISTMAS TREE
The Christmas tree is up and beautifully decorated by the Community Council. Let’s hope there are no further high winds between now and New Year!

Don’t forget ‘Carols around the Tree’ Saturday 15th Dec @ 4pm - followed by mince pies, mulled wine and the Gresford Hand Bell ringers in the Plough afterwards.

We look forward to seeing you there!

PICNIC IN THE PARK  --17th September 2017

Thanks to all those that came  came along to this event. It was a great success, with many villagers turning up on a fabulous, sunny afternoon.  Good use was made of the Community Council's facilities at Allington Park.
The atmosphere was terrific!

Thanks to Gresford Scouts for use of their hut and to the British legion for use of their facilities.

Gresford Playgroup held a successful dog show which raised much- needed funds.  There were local singers and the Pant Yr Ochain railway, and of course The Scarecrows! ( another very successful year).

Ladies of the WI supplied tea and cakes and Fresh and Tasty , hot food.  Stalls present included  IMAGE, Maes Y Pant, Gresford  Community Council, the Library, Sally Malone raising money for her daughter's ballet course, and the Coop community initiative. The Community Council were very pleased to gather resident's views about village matters and ideas for future improvements.

Entry was free , which made it a very affordable experience for families.
It was all about the village and its people getting together in the simplest of ways, to enjoy the park and a community picnic.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR THE CRAFT FESTIVAL

Yet again the Craft Festival  drew hundreds of visitors, 866 to be precise!
As a result of its fund raising , the Craft group were able to make the following donations:

All Saints Church               £1,300
Gresford Memorial Hall   £1,300
Nightingale House            £1,300
North Wales Emergency Doctors Service    £750
Erlas Victorian Walled Garden                       £750
Motor Neurone Disease                                  £750
Gresford and District Community Library  £750

                                                      Challenge Charity
                                                              Wales Air Ambulance              £369

Who would have thought that a group of ladies enjoying the simple pleasures of sewing, knitting, crocheting etc. could lead to 37 years of exhibitions and charity-giving on this scale. Congratulations to all involved!

FEEDING THE DUCKS
We have been brought up to visit a local pond or lake and feed the ducks with bread.  It is woven into our way of life.  However, we now know that bread is in fact harmful to the ducks.  Please have a look at this notice and pass the information on.  We want our Gresford ducks to be very healthy please! There are lots of other things we can do with stale bread... my particular favourite is bread and butter pudding !

Congratulations to Marford players!

Play workers in Marford were rewarded for their work at the  Wrexham Family Information Chidlcare awards event which was held on Friday 3rd February at the Catrin Finch centre at Glyndwr University.
Marford playgroup came runner up for Best playgroup and Temps was runner upl for Best after-school club. Tracey Macloskey of Marford playgroup also won learner of the year.
What a coup!

Gresford Trust recently received a grant from Gresford Community Council towards refurbishment of the two meeting rooms at the Memorial Hall. The Trust went out to tender and local businesses have supplied new carpet, curtains, blinds and redecorated the two rooms. Trustees prepared the rooms over Easter, to minimise disruption to hirers and contributed to the cost of the refurbishment from the maintenance fund which was set up when the Hall was built in 1998.
The Blue Room which is available for general hire but is also used as the Gresford Cricket ‘Club House’ during the season, has been redecorated with a new carpet, curtains, co-ordinating black-out blinds, white board and art work.
The larger, Green Room has also been redecorated and has the same new curtains and black-out blind. The décor was chosen to co-ordinate with the Jack & Jill kitchen, which was refurbished recently.
The Trust is grateful to Gresford Community Council for continuing to support this valued and popular local community asset.
IMAGE VOLUNTEERS were out in force on our Tidy Up Sunday.  Four new wooden planters have been installed and  a couple of old barrels were decommissioned.  This is the continuation of a long term project to replace all the barrel tubs which are rotting and their plants are root -bound.

The costs were covered by proceeds from last year's Scarecrow Trail and remains of a Community Council grant given to install the planters and bench by the notice board.

Unfortunately Storm Doris took its toll on one large  planter's tree and we were left with a stump.  IMAGE has now replaced this with a Photinia bush.  The other tree is now looking very sad and that also may need to be replaced.

GRESFORD HAS A LOLLIPOP MAN!

Gresford Community Council and All Saint's School parents had been trying to recruit a lollipop man for many months.
WCBC advertisements had fallen on stony ground.  Finally, after a press release featuring Councillor Andrew Bailey and representatives of the Home School Association, there were several applicants.  Mr Ray Sommer now joins our community in a very important role.  Traffic is increasing and not always at a safe speed; it is reassuring to know that children will be helped across the road going to and from school.
This email message was received yesterday, Ray's first day in the job.

"Just had to say how thrilled I was to see our new ‘ Lollipop man’ at the end of the road this morning. Lots and lots of smiling parents and a real sense of relief.  It really is such an important thing that you have made happen. Thank you for agreeing to finance this. Kind regards
 Michelle Lewis
 Parent at All Saints School"

Thank you Michelle for your persistence!

A Christmas gift for Val

At the AVOW Christmas Event,  Val Shields was awarded the
Marjorie Dykins OBE Volunteer Memorial Award for 2016.This was presented to
Val by Marjorie's daughter, Jane Dodd, The Mayor of Wrexham and the Chairman
of AVOW , John Leece Jones.

The Awards are designed to recognise the valuable contribution volunteers
make, individually and collectively, to their communities in Wrexham County
Borough.

We would like to congratulate Val. She has contributed to so many
organisations both in our village and nationally, and her knowledge,
experience and wisdom have been invaluable. The attribute one  most admires
is that she is an older person who is always positive, innovative and looks
to the future.  We think this award is well deserved and just recognition
of the huge contribution she has made to our community and the wider

community of Wrexham.  (Gresford Trust statement)
The new bench seat by the lake.
The new bench seat now has a plaque which is a dedication to the memory of Mrs Gwynedd Evans who very generously  donated £5000 to be spent on the lake community.  The seat was funded through this and it is intended to erect an information board in the future.
(Another bench funded by the Community Council has been situated at the end of the road leading to the cemetery.)

DANGEROUS PARKING OUTSIDE THE SHOPS IN GRESFORD

This problem is of increasing concern to pedestrians and drivers and has been a challenge for the Community Council for many years.

The village has a plan that will make it safer but it will not increase parking spaces and is very costly. The area in front of the shops up to the footpath is owned by businesses not the local authority. We welcome any suggestions that you may have. Please join in the discussion thread on our FORUM.
GRESFORD COMMUNITY COUNCIL congratulates all those people dedicated to the success of Gresford Trust, a jewel in our community!  GREAT NEWS!!!
Gresford and District War Memorial Community Centre Trust
serving the community of Gresford, Marford and surrounding district  is awarded
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, for 2016

Gresford Trust, a voluntary group in Gresford which works to manage extensive social and recreational facilities for the benefit of the local community, has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognize outstanding work in their communities. The awards were created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and winners are announced each year on 2 June – the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.

Gresford Trust provides a centre for social activities in Gresford. Committed volunteer Trustees successfully manage four community buildings, 18 acres of recreation land including tennis courts, bowling greens, cricket and football pitches, and independent of Local Authority funding.

The Trust’s mission statement is ‘Run by the village for the village’.

The Memorial Hall is used by local groups for a variety of activities including the village playgroup, local craft, art and chess groups, W.I. indoor bowls, the retirement club and for Gresford Community Council Meetings. A second building houses the snooker club. A new bowling pavilion is home to Gresford village bowling club who play on two adjacent crown greens. The Memorial hall is also hired out for private functions, and by a number of small local enterprises including Pilates, yoga, baby massage, martial arts and modern dance. The Trust’s land is open for use by the local community and is home to the village cricket, soccer and tennis clubs, run by volunteers, catering for a wide range of age groups.

Janet Holmes and Richard Williams represented Gresford Trust at a garden party at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 24th May, where they met the Queen and other winners of this year’s award. Gresford Trust will receive the award from the Lord Lieutenant of Clwyd later this summer.

Gresford Trust is one of 193 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of awards given to groups this year is slightly higher than last year, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to tackle community challenges.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service Committee Chair, former broadcast journalist Sir Martyn Lewis said:

“I warmly congratulate all of the inspirational voluntary groups who have been rewarded for their community work with a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The judging panel for this year’s awards were struck by the quality and breadth of all the successful groups. The thousands of volunteers who give up spare time to help others in their community and to help solve problems demonstrate the very best of democracy in action.”

Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson, said:

“I would like to congratulate all groups who received this year’s Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, in recognition of their fantastic achievements. The huge amount of work and commitment these organisations put into their local communities is surpassed only by the passion and motivation of the individuals who volunteer. I hope these groups continue to inspire others to get involved and make a positive impact so that we can continue to build a more compassionate society.”

Lord Thomas of Gresford made the following statement about the Trust as part of the Active Citizenship debate in the House of Lords in 2010:

“The message from Gresford is that it can be done. There is an abundance of talent and drive in our communities which, if it comes together, will achieve great things.”

The secretary for the Trust, Janet Holmes said:

“The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2016 has been awarded in recognition of the excellence in voluntary activities carried out by Gresford Trust, which represents a tremendous achievement for our organization. Everyone involved in the smooth running of the Trust both past and present, which includes Trustees who represent the villages and those representing our affiliated organizations and groups, our facilities’ supervisor, cleaners and groundsmen, all have reason to feel immensely proud of the recognition that this prestigious award represents. Gresford Trust is delighted that the work done by its volunteers is acknowledged in such a public and positive manner as to be awarded
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service; the MBE for volunteer groups.
We will always welcome new people, who feel they have the drive and energy to be a part of our wonderful organization. Please come and be part of this success story.”

New Village Feature!

Thanks to a Grant from the Community Council, Keep Wales Tidy and IMAGE's fundraising in aid of the Village Improvement Plan, IMAGE has established some new planters and bench by the C.C. notice board in Gresford.

As the trees and bedding plants become established, we hope that this will develop into an attractive feature for the village. We have already seen people resting on the bench on several occasions , and a Mum and her child were having a picnic there on a Sunday morning!

Special thanks must go to Elton Watson, Senior Tree Officer of WCBC who advised us and helped us considerably in realising this project.

DARKER NIGHTS  -Home Security
Ensure your property is locked and secured at all times. leave a light on when you are out, or use a time switch on an indoor light.  Put a time switch on a radio that has been tuned in to a chat station, this will give the impression that the house is occupied. Fit security lighting, either dusk to dawn energy efficient lighting that will come on automatically as dusk sets in, or brighter passive infrared activated lighting drawing attention to movement. Ensure that gates or access to the rear of the house are locked and secure. Dont forget to lock your shed as tools can be used to break in.

Secure windows, paying particular attention to those on the ground floor and above flat roof areas. Use locks and bolts and keep  your keys out of sight and out of reach. Property mark your valuables by using your postcode and your house number or name. Some items are unsuitable for marking so photograph them, with a ruler in view  to show the scale

Gresford Victorian Fountain restoration is honoured by Wrexham Area Civic Society

An awards presentation evening took place at Gresford Trust Memorial hall on Friday 20th November.  IMAGE was presented with an award in the category of Landscape and Environmental Improvement.

This project was funded by Northern Marches Cymru and Gresford Community Council.  It was nominated for the award by the Gresford Community Council. Congratulations to all involved!
Christmas carol singing around the tree was even better this year. The tree was resplendent, the Brass band and Gresford hand bell ringers superb, and Father Christmas as entertaining as ever! It was a very good turnout and everyone in fine voice.  Thanks to all involved.
